Haydamaky im Interview
Ukrainischer Rock in München
Die Folk-Rock-Band aus der Ukraine hat mit uns über ihre Musik, aber auch über die Probleme in ihrem Heimatland gesprochen.
Your music style is rather unique. But how would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to Haydamaky before?
Oleksander: Shortly it is "Kozak Rock" which means Rock'n'Roll in Ukraine. It is Rock but it is Ukrainian Rock. We have many influences like Ska, Reggae, some Balcan things but mostly it is Ukrainian.
Okay so Ukrainean Folk music. And the other special thing about you is your name. It is "Haydamaky" and it refers to a historical event in your home country.
Oleksander: Yes, kind of Ukrainian Robin Hoods - like taking from the rich and giving to the poor.
Political speaking about the political situation in the Ukraine right now. It remains pretty difficult - until today.
Oleksander: We really want you all to know that it is not us who started all of this. We were just invited. It was just a result of political manipulation of Russia. So we had no other choice than to be in this situation and it is very bad for us. Many people were a part of the Russian empire. But now it is not a colonial time and you should set all the people free.
Dmytro: We are trying to have our own country and to manage it like we want to but Russia does not want us to do that because they are good with us. They cannot say that Ukraine is not a part of Russia because all the history comes from Ukraine.
Even though you're well known artists in Ukraine and you could easily land a deal with some big music companies back home, you say it's important for you to stay independent. Why?
Oleksander: It is always important to stay independent and create your own things. When you create your own things you have time to grow. And you are the owner of all the things. Otherwise they go and take it from you.
Dmytro: And the modern world independence - it is not concrete. Everyone is dependent on someone. So we don't talk about independence in this way but we just want to be the managers of our own houses. If your neighbour comes to your house and says, "You must put this here." You would tell him to get out. That is the story about it.
